Internet Security And Virus Control

When it comes to computing most of you know I'm a believer that simple is better. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

However, depending on a few factors, there are some simple low-cost precautions which I recommend:

  • If you have an "always on" broadband internet connection (i.e. cable, DSL) you should have a software firewall. Go to Zone Labs and at the bottom of the page there will be a free download for Zone Alarm. I've used it for years; it's simple, it's effective, it doesn't screw up your computer, and best of all it's free!

  • Want to verify your security situation? Go to www.GRC.com. Test your shields, ports, and many other nasty problem solvers. This guy is an expert to be trusted.

  • Virus Protection and Removal. A lot of you have heard me say that I don't recommend installing anti-virus software on your system, well I don't. But in cases where critical business use or financial data processing are involved, where downtime will literally cost you money, then it could be a good idea. I recommend McAfee (Virus scan only! No firewall, cleanup utilities or anything else.) I've used it and it seems the least likely to interfere with your system. Remember, you must update it regularly, sometimes daily, or it is useless.

For everyone else, including my home systems, you can use a free online virus scanner at Trend
