Before the wireless revolution, computers used to be tied to a phone line or ethernet port for network or internet access. Since then, many technologies and standards have emerged to make computing possible from almost anywhere. Here we will look at the most popular Wi-Fi technologies of the past, present, and future.

The original wireless local area network (WLAN) standard was simply dubbed 802.11. It was standardized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 1997, but was limited to 2 Mbps of bandwidth and averaged much slower. Its adoption was very limited, and few devices were created for the standard.

802.11b was the expanded standard that was specified in 1999. It could support bandwidth up to 11 Mbps, and became the first Wi-Fi standard to be adopted by a large number of consumers. In fact, most consumers’ first router was probably an 802.11b router. In addition to having more speed than the original standard, it also had better signal range, making it feasible to run a network throughout an entire house without significant signal loss.

802.11a is a lesser-known and less popular standard created around the same time as 802.11b. It was more susceptible to interference and signal loss, and was not implemented into most consumer products.

802.11g is currently the most popular Wi-Fi standard on the market today. Most WLAN devices support it, both in consumer products and business products, and it is the most widely supported by computers, phones, and other wireless devices. It supports bandwidth up to 54 Mbps, and its 2.4 Ghz frequency range promotes less signal loss and a longer range than previous standards.

Expanding on the success of 802.11b, the new 802.11n standard is the fastest yet, supporting bandwidth up to 100 Mbps and an even longer signal range, which is also more resistant to signal loss and interference. Having only recently been standardized, it does not yet have the popularity of 802.11g, and its higher price makes it a less-tempting upgrade for those already happy with their current setup. There is little doubt, however, that it is the future of Wi-Fi for at least the next few years.

There are many factors to consider when choosing a laptop, but for many buyers, price is the most important. After all, the buying decision usually begins with a certain budget in mind. Here we will look at 5 budget friendly laptops for those looking for the good value for a low price.

Asus U50F-RBBAG05

Despite its long name, the Asus U50F is a great choice for buyers who want a full-size 15.6 inch screen and solid power and performance for a very low price. It has an Intel Core i3 processor, 4 GB of memory, and a 500 GB hard drive, giving it enough speed and storage to handle almost any need, and its only downside is relatively short battery life.

Asus Eee PC 1001P

The Eee PC’s ultra-low price might make buyers suspicious that its performance will be disappointing, but in fact, it is a very capable netbook that sacrifices very little to achieve its small form factor and affordable price. Not all buyers will like the small 10.1 inch display, but those who value portability will appreciate the compact and lightweight design, as it weighs only 2.8 pounds. The 160 GB hard drive might be a limitation for some buyers.

Toshiba Satellite T235D-S1345

Combining some of the portability of a netbook with a larger 13 inch screen, the Satellite T235D strikes a good balance by providing a little more power and performance. Its low price will be very appealing to budget-conscious buyers, but lack of an optical drive could be a major concern for some users.

Dell Inspiron 14R

The Inspiron 14R might be the most well-rounded in this lineup, as it not only features a Dual Core P6000 processor, 2 GB of RAM, and a 250 GB hard drive, but it also includes a dedicated ATI graphics card for gaming. The result is a machine that can handle a broad spectrum of tasks all at a very low price.

Gateway NV7915u

As the most expensive in this lineup, the NV7915u might be too pricey for many budget buyers, but it is mentioned for those who want a lot of bang for their buck. With an Intel i3 processor, 5 GB of RAM, and a 500 GB hard drive, it gives solid performance no matter what the task. It also includes some nice extras such as an HDMI port and multitouch track pad for convenience.

The many models and configurations of laptops available on the market mean that any user can find one to suit their needs. Budget-conscious buyers no longer have to sacrifice performance or features to get the price they want, and these laptops prove it.

The laptop LCD inverter, or display inverter, is responsible for supplying the correct voltage to the LCD backlight of a laptop LCD screen. Since the backlight is usually the most power-intensive part in a laptop, it requires more voltage than other parts. This is the job of the inverter, to regulate and supply the high voltage necessary to illuminate the backlight tube.

Diagnosing a problem with your HP laptop inverter is usually fairly easy, but may involve some trial and error. If you are experiencing flickering of the screen or the screen is very dim, the inverter is very the likely culprit. Additionally, if the screen doesn’t come on but there is still a faint image visible, or there is a buzzing noise coming from the bottom of the screen, the inverter could be the cause of the issue. Replacing the part is often much easier than repairing it, as an HP laptop inverter replacement is usually inexpensive.

The instructions for replacing you HP laptop inverter vary by model, but the instructions below will apply to most models.

1. Remove the battery and disconnect all power to the laptop. It is also a good idea to leave the laptop for a few hours without power as the inverter can sometimes continue to hold a charge.

2. Remove the screws around the screen’s plastic shell and gently pry the bezel away from the screen. Be careful not to damage any components behind the bezel or the bezel itself.

3. The inverter is usually located at the bottom of the LCD display and should be visible. Remove the Backlight cable and signal cable from the inverter.

4. Remove any screws securing it to the laptop body and gently pull it out.

5. Re-install the replacement inverter into the machine and replace any screws removed earlier. Connect the cables to the new inverter replacement part.

6. Reverse the disassembly instructions to reassemble the laptop.

7. Test your display to ensure proper operation. If your issue remains, you may have an issue with other components of the Laptop display or other components in the main body of the laptop. You want to seek the services of a Laptop Repair center to have the problem diagnosed with greater detail.

These instructions will apply to the majority of HP laptops, but for more detailed instructions, search for a service manual for your particular model, or check out search engine results for other users that may have posted more detailed information pertaining to your model.

If you are having issues with your Toshiba laptop’s screen flickering or a screen that is too faint to read, it may be time for a replacement Toshiba laptop inverter. This occurs because the backlight is not receiving the correct voltage. In some cases, you might also hear a faint buzzing sound. Most laptops use an LCD panel with fluorescent bulbs used as their backlighting source which is then filtered through the liquid crystals to create the image. Since laptops run on fairly low voltages, the backlight would be too faint to read without more power. This is the job of the laptop inverter.

Replacing the Toshiba laptop inverter is a fairly straightforward process. The steps vary depending on the laptop model, but the general steps are as follows:

1. Unplug the laptop and remove the battery to ensure no power is going to the laptop.

2. Remove any screws around the LCD screen and gently pry apart the bezel around the screen.

3. In most cases, the inverter is a small circuit board located below the screen. Remove any screws securing it in place and any cables, and gently remove it.

4. Connect any cables to the new inverter and replace the screws.

5. Reverse the instructions to reassemble the screen.

6. Power up the laptop and test the screen brightness to ensure the new part is functioning correctly.

When shopping for a Toshiba laptop inverter replacement, it is important to ensure the part you order is compatible with your specific model. Although laptop inverter boards are all similar, they are usually not interchangeable, and using an incompatible part could cause damage to your Toshiba laptop.

Replacing an Acer laptop keyboard is not a terribly difficult task, but it is not the most basic repair easy either. Those familiar with assembling and disassembling computers should be able to handle it quite well, however. Replacing an Acer laptop keyboard doesn’t require any special tools other than a set of small screw drivers.

When shopping for a replacement Acer laptop keyboard, it is recommended that you use a parts locator tool to find a part that is compatible with your model. Since different models often use parts with small differences that make them incompatible with each other, enter your laptop’s model number into a parts locator tool that shows you specific parts that are compatible with your model.

Before starting the process, search the internet for a service manual for your specific laptop. Simply do an internet search for “service manual” and your laptop’s manufacturer and model number. Often, you can find a PDF manual that will detail the process for you. You should also use an anti-static wrist band to avoid damaging your laptop with static electricity.

The steps for replacing keyboards are often different for each model, but here are the basic steps to replacing your Acer laptop keyboard.

1. Shut down the laptop and remove the battery completely.

2. You will need to remove a series of screws from the bottom of the laptop. Some of these screws may be located inside the battery compartment.

3. Depending on your laptop model, either gently pry up the plastic surrounding the keyboard, or separate the two plastic pieces that make up the shell of the laptop.

4. There may be a few screws securing the keyboard to the shell. Remove these screws and gently lift the keyboard up and forward.

5. The keyboard will be connected by a small ribbon cable. Very gently, pull the ribbon cable up to disconnect it from the motherboard.

6. Connect the replacement keyboard’s ribbon cable, and slide it into place.

7. Reverse the above steps to reassemble the laptop.

With a little preparation and a lot of care, replacing your Acer laptop keyboard can be a fairly simple process. With a little luck, you should have your laptop back up and running in no time.

As one of the largest companies in the world, Sony has a reputation for quality. Sony’s laptops, especially their VAIO series, are often chosen by high-end users who need quality and style in their laptop.

Sony is one of the few laptop manufacturers to make their own laptop batteries. In fact, they also make laptop batteries for many other manufacturers. The majority of the batteries they make use lithium-ion technology. Lithium-ion is chosen for its long battery life, its large power-to-weight ratio, and lack of the “memory effect” that affects older battery technologies.

When shopping for a replacement for a Sony laptop battery, you should carefully remove the old battery to look for a model number or serial number that will help identify the replacement. First, shut down the laptop and disconnect its power cord. Turn the laptop over and find the release slider or button that releases the Sony laptop battery, then carefully remove it.

The easiest way to find a replacement for your Sony laptop battery is to use a parts locator tool, or a part number search, available at many online retailers. This tool allows users to enter their laptop or battery model number, and will then display compatible parts for replacement. Since many laptop batteries are only compatible with specific models, it is important to ensure that the Sony laptop battery you buy is compatible with your exact model.

When shopping, you may be given the option of buying an OEM battery or a compatible battery. A compatible laptop battery is one made with the same specifications of the original battery, but at a lower price, since it is not made by the manufacturer of the laptop. When buying compatible batteries, ensure that you are buying from a reputable seller that guarantees the quality of their products.

Once you have your new battery, simply replace it in the same way you removed your old battery, power up your laptop and ensure that your new battery is working.

Replacing a Toshiba laptop keyboard is not a simple task, but it is basic enough that most users can accomplish it with a little research and some solid planning.

Since all laptops have slightly different methods for disassembly, it is a good idea to find a service manual for your specific model, to ensure you use the right procedure. Do an internet search for your laptop model and the term “service manual”. You will often find that helpful users have posted the service manual for your Toshiba laptop in PDF format, which will give you detailed instructions for removing and replacing the keyboard. The basic steps are given below.

1. Unplug and power down the laptop and remove the battery. Ensure that no power is running to the laptop to reduce the risk of electric shock. It is also a good idea to use an anti-static wristband to avoid static charges that could damage your laptop.

2. Remove the screws from the back of the laptop. Be sure to keep track of all screws very carefully at each step, to ensure that the proper screws are reinserted into their proper locations.

3. Separate the plastic cover above the keyboard of the laptop. Remove the screw or screws holding the keyboard into the laptop. These are usually located under the cover along the top of the keyboard.

4. Pull up gently on the keyboard, and flip it slightly forward. It should be connected by a thin ribbon cable. Gently pry the ribbon cable from the motherboard, being careful not to damage the connector.

5. Connect the replacement keyboard’s ribbon cable to the motherboard in the same manner that you removed the previous keyboard.

6. Replace the screws holding the keyboard into the laptop, and replace the plastic shell.

7. Replace all screws into their original position, replace the battery, and power up the computer to ensure the new keyboard is working.

Replacing a Toshiba laptop keyboard is more complicated than many simple upgrades, but with the proper information, you can have the satisfaction of doing the job yourself.

Buying and installing a Dell laptop battery replacement can be very simple, and doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. There are a few things to consider, however, when buying a replacement battery.

Buying a replacement battery directly from Dell is one way to ensure quality, but buying directly from the manufacturer is usually the most expensive option. Instead, many buyers may want to consider a third-party retailer. Make sure you find a reputable retailer who stands behind their product, especially one that offers a satisfaction guarantee and a solid return policy. If you buy from a third-party retailer with a reputation for quality and customer satisfaction, you can pay less for your replacement laptop battery and still have the peace of mind that your battery will work reliably.

The best way to ensure you purchase the correct replacement notebook battery is to use an online parts locator tool. This tool allows you to choose your laptop’s model number and then shows you the parts that are compatible with your model. It is a good idea to compare the voltage and amperage from your old battery to ensure they match the new battery you are planning to buy. In some cases, you may have the option to buy a battery with more capacity and longer battery life than the one you are replacing. Most of these batteries accomplish this by including more cells. For example, the original battery may have 6 cells, while the replacement battery has 9 cells, and therefore, longer battery life.

Replacing the battery in your Dell laptop is very easy. First, shut down the laptop and disconnect the AC adapter to ensure that no power is running to the machine. Second, release the latch near the current battery, and remove the battery. Align the new battery in the same way the old battery was removed, and snap it into place. You may need to fully charge the battery before running the laptop from battery power only.

Before making repairs on HP laptop motherboards, it is always wise to consult the user’s manual or the HP support website. Another important precaution ,when replacing Toshiba laptop motherboards, is to be sure that the device is completely powered-off, and the battery is removed. Also, discharge any power that may be retained in the device (by pressing the power button an additional time) along with any static-electricity that may have been accumulated. The first step to replacing Toshiba laptop motherboards is to lay the laptop face-down, and remove all of the screws on the bottom of the notebook that secure down the external casing. One screw is located in each corner, as well as one or two screws in the center of the device.

Once all screws have been removed, the laptop’s hard drive should be able to slide out. The hard drive bay is marked with an engraved symbol, and is attached to the HP laptop motherboard. The next step to replacing Toshiba laptop motherboards, is to turn the computer back over, and open the screen’s lid. With a flat-head screwdriver, pry underneath the large plastic section, located above the keyboard. It is the housing for the indicator lights and power button. After removing the plastic housing, disconnect the cable connecting it to the HP laptop motherboard. Also remove the keyboard from the case, and disconnect the ribbon cable. Unscrew the screen hinges from the case, pull them out, and set them aside.

Locate the network card, and disconnect it from the port on the Toshiba laptop motherboard. Remove the screws holding the graphics card. Disconnect the card from the motherboard and set it aside. Then, remove the screws for the fan and heat sink unit on the laptop’s processor. Remove the unit and processor from the HP laptop motherboard, and with a screwdriver, take out the screws along its edges. Finally, lift the damaged motherboard out of the casing, and place it aside. Insert the one of the compatible motherboards for HP laptops into the casing, and reassemble the internal parts that were previously removed. It is highly recommended to take a photograph of the Toshiba laptop motherboard’s unit throughout the repair procedure, to utilize during the rebuilding process.

Before replacing laptop LCD screens, it is strongly suggested to consult the user’s manual and/or the support website. Another necessary preparation for laptop Lcd screen replacement, is to remove the battery, and discharge any power that may have been retained in the device. Static electricity accumulated by the user, can cause additional damage to the notebook and laptop LCD screen. It is also recommended to be grounded to a non-painted metal surface, throughout the repair process. Many professionals choose to use an anti-static wristband, preventing any unnecessary damage to the laptop device.

The first step in laptop LCD screen replacement is to being separating the screen bezel, from the display cover. There are no screws securing the bezel in place, therefore it should be easily removed from the hinges. Remove the 6 screws that secure the laptop LCD screen assembly, and separate the LCD screen assembly from the display cover. Place the laptop LCD screen assembly face-down on the palm rest, to gain access to the back side of the screen.

Next, disconnect cables for the laptop LCD screen, located on the back of the display. Also disconnect the video cable connector, running from the LCD screen control-board. When replacing laptop Lcd screens, parts of the video cable may be glued to the screen. Carefully unglue the cable, and disconnect it from the inverter-board. Then, remove the screen assembly, and transfer the mounting brackets from the broken screen, to the replacement laptop Lcd screen.

At first glance, the inverter-board appears to be attached to the LCD screen. The inverter board can be removed and replaced separately, and is secured to the LCD bracket by a single screw. Disconnect the screen backlight cable from the inverter-board, and slide the inverter about 3-4 millimeters. Lift up the left side of the inverter, and remove it from the bracket. The inverter-board can be glued back onto the bracket with the replacement laptop Lcd screen.
